We've had the first trailer for Paul Feig's Ghostbusters in recent days, but lest we forget, there is another... Announced last autumn was an additional, animated Ghostbusters film of as-yet mysterious content, being developed by Sony and Ivan Reitman. That film now has a director. Commercials man Fletcher Moules will be calling the shots.
If his name's unfamiliar, you may have seen some of his work without knowing. Moules was behind the recent, lavish CLash Of Clans advertising campaign playing in cinemas and at the Superbowl and scoring online views in the hundreds of millions: the ones with Christoph Waltz reading a bedtime story to James Corden, and Liam Neeson going all Taken in a bakery{
As with the "brain trusts' at Marvel and DC/Warner, Sony apparently now has a "Ghost Corps" in place, comprising Reitman, Dan Aykroyd and others, to oversee the expansion of the Ghostbusters franchise into something bigger: interconnected movie "universes" being all the rage these days. There has already been talk of a third new Ghostbusters with Channing Tatum and the Russo Brothers, although Tatum has said that isn't happening and it's all gone quiet on that front for now. But with Sony already planning a meeting of the Jump Street and Men In Black franchises, you can see where this might all be heading.
There's no sense yet of when Moules' animated Ghostbusters might arrive or what sort of form it'll take. Nostalgia-fest with the original cast on voice duties? Something for younger viewers? Something entirely else? We'll keep you posted. In the meantime, Feig's Ghostbusters starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth, is out on July 15.
