Last we heard, the protracted saga was still dragging on, and Dan Aykroyd had taken over the script from Office writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. There's some intriguing intel from the usually reliable Production Weekly this morning though: they're suggesting that Ghostbusters 3** has a start date.

"We're hearing that Sony Pictures is planning to put Ivan Reitman's Ghostbusters 3 into production in May 2011" tweets the tweet. They're hearing. Sony are planning. That's a lot of careful equivocation in a short sentence, suggesting that the film may yet be spirited away from production once again.

But if it's true, it would mean a place for Ray, Peter, Egon and Winston in Sony's 2012 summer roster. It would also mean that Aykroyd's script-tweaking (the story, as far as we know, involves a next generation of Ghostbusters, Dana Barret's son Oscar among them, taking over from the increasingly decrepit originals) has found approval at the studio. Is this a green light we see before us? Should we start calling this **Ghostbusters 3D **now?
