Scary novel optioned

Joe Hill has possibly the finest horror novel pedigree known to fiction. Don’t recognise the name? What if we told you his dad’s name is Stephen. As in “King”.

Yeah, now you’re interested. Hill, however, has pulled off the impressive task of selling the screen rights to his thriller novel Heart Shaped Box to Warners without once revealing who his famous father is.

The plot sees a singer fascinated by the occult purchasing a ghost on eBay. Taking the form of a man’s burial suit, the spirit eventually forces the singer to confront both it and his own demons.

Hill won’t write the script himself – the studio is looking for a writer to adapt the book – and if you want to read the novel, be prepared to wait: it won’t be published until next year. Oh well… At least we can avoid too many spoilers.
