Gerard Butler is certainly trying to stay busy of late, and is aiming to set up another action franchise. He's now set to star in Afterburn, with The Villainess' Jung Byung-gil directing.
According to Deadline the movie has been one that Butler has tried to get moving for a while now. It'll adapt the Red 5 comic by Paul Ens, Scott Chitwood and Wayne Nichols, and features a tale set in the future, five years after a solar flare disrupts all technology in Europe and creatures a lot of mutations. Butler will be a treasure hunter who headed to France to retrieve the Mona Lisa, and ends up paired with a strong-willed weapons expert who has her own agenda.
Apparently, the aim is to generate a series of films from the concept, with the hero involved in quiet, heartfelt dramas that feature.... just kidding. It'll be along the lines of National Treasure, where Butler's team hunts for other antiquities. With producer Neal Moritz overseeing things, the movie should start shooting later in the summer.
Butler's recently set up a sequel to crime thriller Den Of Thieves and is about to start shooting second Olympus Has Fallen sequel Angel Has Fallen.
