The persistent speculation linking Buffy The Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar to a live action version of 70s TV ‘toon Scooby Doo, has finally been confirmed. Buffy co-producer Doug Petrie laid the rumours to rest on the BBC’s Buffy website by stating that Gellar had signed on for the movie and that the cult TV show’s production team were now working out a schedule to enable her to fulfill commitments to both projects. Gellar will play sexy ghost-chaser Daphne, girlfriend of blond hunk Fred who will be played by her real-life beau Freddie Prinze Jr. Other confirmed cast members include Scream’s Matthew Lillard as Shaggy and Linda Cardellini as the frumpy Velma. Cardellini is best known for her regular gig on TV show Freaks & Geeks. Scooby himself will be brought to life by the miracle of CGI as will a host of spooks and specters. Hefting the megaphone will be Raja Gosnell (Big Momma’s House, Never Been Kissed) and 20th Century Fox are predicting an unconfirmed 2002 release. One thing that Gellar’s involvement in the movie spells is an end to the ‘Scooby Gang’ nickname for Buffy and her vampire-slaying chums. "We can’t use it any more," says Petrie. "She is literally part of the Scooby Gang in what I’m sure will be a hit motion picture, so we’re screwed with that."
