It's fair to say we've never seen Gary Oldman look like this before. The veteran British actor has spent more than a few hours in make-up to play wartime leader Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour – and following the first trailer that arrived back in July, we've now been treated to a new teaser – take a look below.

Joe Wright is behind the camera for this one, returning to roughly the same time period of his earlier drama Atonement – in the bleak early years of World War II, when the prospects for the Allies seemed hopeless. Churchill fights to keep victory within his sights – while also fighting to be taken seriously by certain fellow politicians.

Joining Oldman in the cast is Kristin Scott Thomas as Churchill's wife, Clementine, Ben Mendelsohn as King George VI, Lily James as Churchill's personal secretary Elizabeth Nel, and Stephen Dillane as the foreign secretary, Lord Halifax. Darkest Hour arrives in UK cinemas on 12 January, following an awards-qualifying run in the US starting 22 November this year. Keep your eyes peeled for a trailer breakdown from director Joe Wright to appear on this very website imminently.
