It’s nearly a year since Game of Thrones last hit our screens with the Season 7 finale, setting the stage for the mightiest of showdowns in Season 8’s endgame: the Night King has breached the wall, most of Westeros is going north to fight him, and Cersei’s still looking out for her own skin. Fans are having to wait a whole extra year for their final trip to the Seven Kingdoms ('final' until the prequel series arrives, that is) – but now we have a slightly better idea of when the remaining six episodes will air.

HBO had previously only stated that the final season would air sometime in 2019, but an update makes it sound like it won’t be a summer-scheduled season like Season 7 was. Speaking at the Television Critics Association’s Summer Press Tour, HBO’s President of Programming Casey Bloys said that we’ll see Season 8 in the “first half” of the year – possibly indicating a return to the April release schedule of the first six seasons.

While the final season will only feature six episodes, they’re all expected to be extended instalments running up to 90 minutes. If you need a refresher on where all the characters ended up by the close of Season 7, take a look at our handy Season 8 guide over here.
