It’s Emmy Awards voting season again in the States, with the Television Academy announcing the nominations for this year’s event. And the Game Of Thrones team is once again out ahead of the pack with a huge list of 24 nominations.
As usual, the nominations are a blend of no-brainers (Elisabeth Moss, for Mad Men, for example), surprises (less appreciation for the hugely popular music family drama Empire than might have been expected) and some nice love shown to people who have deserved awards long before this (Tatiana Maslany is finally up for a trophy for the six characters she plays on Orphan Black, occasionally more than one in the same scene).
Netflix again did well in terms of nominations, with Daredevil on three possible awards, Orange Is The New Black (in a switch from comedy to drama for some mystifying reason) scoring four nominations, new stable mate Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in the mix for seven (Dammit!), and, of course, old hand House Of Cards up for 11. Amazon has reason to be happy, with the excellent Transparent also up for 11.
Amy Schumer, whose Inside Amy Schumer was nominated last year, returned with a vengeance, earning seven nominations, while some of the newer arrivals on the list included Better Call Saul, also with seven, Wolf Hall, which has eight and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver on four, which seems set to benefit from the Academy’s new category split between “variety talk” shows and “variety sketch” shows.
