Since wrapping up Game Of Thrones, writers, producers and and occasional directors David Benioff and DB Weiss have been signing onto big new deals (Netflix) and dropping other planned projects (Star Wars). They've now set up an interesting new possibility with Warner Bros., kicking off development on an untitled film that draws on HP Lovecraft's iconic horror work.

According to Deadline, it's something they've been eyeing for a few years, though their duties on Thrones got in the way of them pursuing it. And they'd talked to Warners about it before they signed the Netflix contract. The trade site has few plot details, but did discover the basic log line: "What if HP Lovecraft wasn’t making it up? What if the monsters he created are real?" The movie will apparently be set in the 1920s within the Cthulhu mythos. Expect giant space beasts and madness! If it goes ahead, that is.

And while you might question them taking this one when they apparently couldn't find time for Star Wars alongside their Netflix developments, the pair is handing off the early work to others: The Invitation writers Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi will write the script, while that movie's director, Karyn Kusama will be an executive producer. There's no indication as of yet if Benioff and Weiss will direct when the script is complete.

Lovecraft is having a moment of late, between Color Out Of Space (out 28 February) and Jordan Peele and Misha Green's series Lovecraft Country.

We'll take your jokes about "it won't end well!" off the air.
