Even though there is a prequel film – The First Purge – arriving this year, the Purge franchise is expanding even further beyond that, spreading its murder spree-happy tentacles to TV screens. Gabriel Chavarria and Jessica Garza will be the leads in the eponymous series for US networks USA and Syfy.
James DeMonaco, who dreamt up the concept and has directed all but this year's entry, is running the show, which likely explains his absence from the cinematic version. Blumhouse Television is backing the series, which will follows an entirely new chapter in the series, but still set on one of the days where murder and other crimes are legal as part of a weird future American society.
Chavarria is playing Miguel a US Marine who receives a cryptic letter from his sister Penelope, prompting him to return to his home town on Purge Night, ready to face the violence to protect his family. For her part, Penelope is part of a cult that worships the annual ritual, and has even pledged herself to be sacrificed at the request of the cult's charismatic leader. But her faith is tested when she learns the horrific reality of the event.
The series doesn't yet have a launch date. The First Purge, meanwhile, will be out on 6 July.
