After the release of a teaser that was decidedly lacking in the title creature, the new, full trailer for Venom has debuted, and it makes up for that much-derided first attempt. Check it out...
Though Venom as a comics character launched as a villain in the Spider-Man comics, this is one of Sony's own Spider-spin-offs with no solid connection to the MCU, so we're not expecting everyone's favourite friendly neighbourhood web-slinger to stop by, and even if Tom Holland does show his face (masked or otherwise), expect it to be little more than a fleeting cameo or post-credit sting.
Instead, what director Ruben Fleischer is aiming for is the anti-hero tone that has become a big part of Venom stories. Tom Hardy is journalist Eddie Brock, here investigating the dodgy doings of one Dr. Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed), whose lab has discovered the landed symbiote and its kind and is using them in human experimentation. Tipped off by a scared scientist played by Jenny Slate, he heads to Drake's facility and, wouldn't you just know it, ends up merged with the symbiote. Soon, he's hearing a voice in his head, generating slippery black tentacles showing all manner of powers.
This new trailer highlights the more grounded style – well, as grounded as you can be with something that looks like a living oil slick with teeth – and action of the movie.
Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson are also part of the cast for the film, which arrives on 5 October.
