How do you follow the time travel twistiness of Dark? If you're co-creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, who have teamed up again with Netflix for new series 1899, you pile on more mystery and crank up the danger – but leave the chrono-skipping at home. Well, probably. Check out the new teaser for the new series.
1899 follows the voyage of a ship travelling from Europe to New York. The passengers, all of different backgrounds and nationalities, are united by their hopes and dreams for a new century and their future abroad.
When they discover a second ship adrift on the open sea that had gone missing for months, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a nightmare-like riddle, connecting each of the passenger’s pasts through a web of secrets... Key to some of those is Maura Franklin (Emily Beecham), a forthright and mysterious woman with a fascinating background.
Oh, and along with the mystery comes new voices, since the international cast (which includes Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musial, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Rosalie Craig, Clara Rosager, Maria Erwolter, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier, José Pimentão, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Jonas Bloquet, Fflyn Edwards and Alexandre Willaume) are all speaking their own languages.
We chatted to Beacham in May last year about the filming process, which was then in its early days. She talked up how Odar and Friese were employing LED volume tech, a la The Mandalorian to bring the backdrops to life. And you can see more about their use in a new featurette...
1899 has yet to lock down a release date – just one more mystery!
