When you think of Cannes, that world-renowned festival of cinephile worship, you naturally also think The Emoji Movie. Or at least, that was the plan for a new stunt to launch the animated adventure this week, which has also put a new trailer out into the world.
The Emoji Movie is set inside the world of one boy's phone where the messaging app Textopolis is the bustling metropolis home to all the emojis. It's here that Gene (T.J. Miller) lives, an emoji born without a filter who can display any face he wants. But when his ability makes his owner think the phone is broken, Gene and his friends Hi-5 (James Corden) and Jailbreak (Anna Faris, replacing the previously announced Ilana Glazer) must save their world before it is deleted forever.
If you were wondering when Candy Crush might get its own movie, the answer is not yet, but it does pop up as part of the trio's journey here. Topical!
With Igor director Tony Leondis overseeing the madness, The Emoji Movie will be out in our cinemas on 4 August. Please be advised that yes, this is the film where Patrick Stewart, knight of the realm and Empire Legend plays a poop.
