The first teaser trailer for Paul Bettany’s latest dose of arse-kicking action, **Priest, debuted online a couple of months ago. And now we havethe full theatrical promo for the movie, arriving over at Crackle.
Priest, adapted from Min-Woo Hyung’s Tokyopop graphic novel series, is set in an alternate, dystopian world where civilisation was nearly destroyed after years of war between mankind and the vicious, subterranean vampire race, a sort of cross between hell spawn and the xenomoprh from Alien.
While humanity did eventually beat back the monstrous hordes, the victory came at a hefty price: most people now live in walled cities controlled by the church. And things are even worse for the warrior priests that the religious types trained to battle the vampires – now they’re no longer needed on active duty, the fabled fighters are reduced to the dregs of society, shunned by the populace despite their heroic battles.
But when a revitalised vampire group kidnaps one of the former soldiers’ nieces, it’s up to him to go against the church elders’ wishes to get her back from the wastelands. Cue Bettany digging out his old weapons and heading out on the hunt, even as other priests are dispatched to try to stop him.
Given that this comes from Legion director Scott Stewart, this will have to go some to restore the good faith flushed down the loo by that film. But if Legion did leave you wanting more of Paul Bettany doing his best Clint Eastwood, then Priest might have what you’re looking for.
The movie arrives in 3D on May 13.
