Hollywood's most authoritative actor, Morgan Freeman, and its swashbucklingest star, Antonio Banderas, are teaming up for a new crime caper / drama called The Code, with Mimi Leder directing.
Happily, this in no way involves Da Vinci or any massive religious conspiracies (that we know of). Freeman will be playing a veteran thief, who recruits a younger crook (Banderas) to help him pull off one last job and repay a debt to the Russian mafia. We're guessing, as ever where "one last job" is planned, things go a bit kablooie.
Reuben "brother of Mimi" Leder wrote the story, with TV writer Ted Humphrey turning it into a script, making it the latter's film debut. Meanwhile, it's Leder's first film as director since 2000's Pay It Forward - but we're guessing that this will be a little less schmaltzy so don't let that put you off. Shooting is due to start in two weeks in Sofia, Bulgaria, so look out for this sometime in 2008.
