If you’ve only seen Dax Shepard in the likes of Without a Paddle, When In Rome and** The Comebacks**, then we’re truly, truly sorry for you. And you might not realise that the man appears to have some dramatic depth lurking under all that wacky mugging. But director/actor Katie Aselton clearly noticed, and cast him in indie drama The Freebie, which has just released its first trailer.
The film follows a married couple (Aselton and Shepard) whose relationship is comfortable, loving and, even if they don’t really want to admit it to themselves, a little bit stale.
So they hatch an idea that they’ll each get one no-strings one night stand to see if that re-ignites the passion that is seemingly lacking in their lives. Can you guess what happens next? Actually, the movie, which got plenty of praise at Sundance this year, seems to be more interested in exploring the idea than just going for the easy, “There are problems!” plot. And who knows? Maybe it’ll inspire the likes of Dane Cook to take up actual acting? Doubt it in Dane’s case, though.
The film doesn’t have a release date over here yet.
