Francis Lawrence has recently reunited with his Hunger Games star, Jennifer Lawrence for Red Sparrow, which finds a woman fighting her own battles in Russia. He's sticking with the country for a new, truth-based war drama called Five Faces Of Maria.
The film, which has a script by Gina Welch, will tell the story of Maria Bochkavera, a woman who overcame poverty and abuse in Russia to fight alongside male soldiers during World War I. Rising through the ranks, and proving an inspiration to her fellow troops, she ended up forming the Women's Battalion of Death, the first all-female Russian combat regiment. Recruiting nearly 2000 women, the regiment had enormous success on the Eastern front.
Universal and eOne will handle putting the film out into the world once it is completed. As for Red Sparrow, the thriller will be out in the UK on 2 March.
