We don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but apparently there’s been some sort of financial crisis over the past month or so. Something to do with the world’s economy going to hell in a handbasket, we think. Empire’s ok, thank God – we checked our piggybank today, and our life savings of £4.42, two Murrays Mints and a dead moth were intact.
But, in a world where the only thing brokers are stocking up on is razorblades and where major banks are in such dire straits that they’ve taken to calling confused.com for help with a consolidation loan, Hollywood is aware that now may be the time for the return of Gordon Gekko, the legendary sleazeball villain of Oliver Stone’s Wall Street.
There’s been talk of a Wall Street sequel for some time now, but today Fox set the ball rolling by asking screenwriter Allan Loeb to start work on a page one rewrite of the existing script for Money Never Sleeps, which will see Gekko return in some capacity.
Michael Douglas – who bagged his only Oscar to date for playing Gekko – has yet to make a decision about whether he would play Gekko. He’ll make his mind up after reading Loeb’s finished draft.
There’s also no word on whether Oliver Stone will return, but original producer Ed Pressman, is on board. So let’s wait and see, eh? That’s assuming, of course, that there’s any money left in the world to actually fund the damn thing.
