Amazon.com has been expanding for a long while now, selling not only DVDs, books and CDs, but toys, games, hardware, software, clothes, groceries and Lord knows what else. Nothing wrong with that – that’s capitalism in full effect.
But we weren’t expecting them to actually, y’know, make a movie.
Yet that’s exactly what the company is doing, in association with Fox.
The unlikely partners have announced plans to produce The Stolen Child, an adaptation of the kids’ fantasy novel by Keith Donahue.
Now, in this post-Potter landscape, we’re always a little wary of the latest kids’ flick to come down the pipe, given that most of them seem like empty and cynical attempts to follow in the footsteps of Warner’s cash-chugging behemoth.
But The Stolen Child sounds like it might be promising. Bear in mind that we haven’t read the book – perhaps we should buy it through amazon.co.uk – but the premise, in which a young boy is kidnapped by hobgoblins and replaced with a look-alike, certainly sounds intriguing.
Amazon actually secured the rights back in 2006, and had set Ron Nyswaner to write the script before the Writers Strike delayed matters. Now, with that done and dusted, it’s go go go again, with Marc Platt producing for the Seattle-based company.
It’s certainly an intriguing development, and we look forward to other companies following Amazon’s lead and heading into movie production. B&Q: The Movie will just blow your mind!
