You just can’t keep a good woman down. Despite the release of fanboy favourite Serenity, Jodie Foster’s first headlining film in three years has remained at the top of the American box office for the second week running, grabbing $15 million, bringing its total to just over $46 million.

Joss Whedon’s Firefly spin-off took in a disappointing $10million to grab the second spot, but could at least boast a higher screen average than Flightplan, suggesting it might have long term legs.

Elsewhere in the charts: Corpse Bride is doing middling business at number 3, with an additional $9.75million bringing its total to $32million, while David Cronenburg’s A History of Violence continues to perform strongly on a limited release, adding $8.2million to its gross. The only other new addition to the top ten was Bill Paxton’s golf movie, The Greatest Game Ever Played, with $3.75million to take 9th spot.

Dwelling way outside the top ten but doing thundering business on its own scale was Capote, an awards probable starring Philip Seymour Hoffman as the famed writer. It may only have taken $349,000, but that was on only 12 screens, giving it a $29,000 screen average, more than six times that of Flightplan.
