She dealt with psycho visitor (and Empire spirit animal) Dan Stevens in The Guest and was menaced by a nasty, sexually-transmitted demon in It Follows. Now Maika Monroe has agreed to her biggest challenge yet, as Roland Emmerich announces she’s part of the cast for Independence Day 2.
I have another addition to announce. The beautiful & talented Maika Monroe is officially signed on 2 the Independence Day Sequel! > > — Roland Emmerich (@rolandemmerich) [April 27, 2015](https://twitter.com/rolandemmerich/status/592801052128366592)
Monroe joins an already loaded ensemble that blends veterans from the 1996 film, including Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner and Judd Hirsch, with newcomers to the franchise Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Travis Tope and Joey King.
Monroe's role is currently being kept quiet, although it’s possible she will be the grown daughter of Pullman’s former president Thomas J. Whitmore, a part played in the original by Mae Whitman. Yet we could see Whitman being brought back, since she hasn't dropped out of the entertainment world like some young actresses and has enjoyed a healthy career in the interim.
As for the plot? That’s also still under wraps, but all signs point to a return engagement with the invading aliens from the original and humanity preparing to meet them with technology developed thanks to reverse engineering the craft left behind last time. With Carter Blanchard, James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright having contributed to the script, Emmerich is planning to shoot this year ready for a June 24, 2016 release date.
