Slightly cheesy action heroes are the new black. Following the earlier announcement that Buck Rogers is getting a remake and today's news of a Highlander reboot, one of history's favourite sci-fi adventurers is returning to cinema screens. Yes, in the immortal words of Brian Blessed, Gordon's ALIVE!

Sony has been victorious in a protracted bidding war among a number of studios for the rights to make a new live-action movie based on Alex Raymond's 1930s comic strip Flash Gordon, about a polo player who is transported to the planet Mongo and forced to battle the evil ruler Ming the Merciless.

The property has, of course, been famously adapted for film, in Mike Hodge's valiant 1980 experiment in seeing just how much camp can be squeezed onto one screen at any given time. Turns out that the answer was lots. It's also had several TV adaptations throughout the decades since its creation.

Breck Eisner (Sahara), is currently attached to direct and executive produce the film. Though there are no confirmed details on the path of the movie, we'd very much doubt that they'll be looking to plough the same kitsch furrow as the 1980s Flash. Although part of us hopes that Brian Blessed makes it in there somewhere, just for a bit of shouting.
