With Judd Apatow aboard as a producer, The Big Sick has been going over well for festival crowds, and the wider world is now getting a look at the comedy. Check out the first trailer for the movie.
Based on the real-life romance between writer/star Kumail Nanjiani (who might be best known for Silicon Valley or the host of scene-stealing appearances he's logged in recent comedies) and co-writer Emily V. Gordon, The Big Sick draws on the couple's mixture of laughs and poignant emotion.
Not only must they deal with Kumail's Pakistani family being less than thrilled that he's dating a white woman and not one of the several girls they've tried to set up an arranged marriage with, but there's Emily's (played by Zoe Kazan in the film) health issues. Kumail actually meets her parents (Ray Romano and Holly Hunter) in a hospital waiting room, as Emily is in a medically induced coma after contracting a mysterious illness. Cue culture-clash comedy and presumably a happy ending... Not least because the pair is married in real life.
Michael Showalter is the director for this one, which also features Kurt Braunholer, Bo Burnham, Adeel Akhtar and Aidy Bryant. The Big Sick will be out in the US on 23 June and actually premieres here at Sundance Film Festival: London on 3 June ahead of a general release on 28 July.
