Having played at Cannes to a slightly mixed (but overall warm) critical reaction, Jeff Nichols' latest, Loving, now has its eye on a more general roll out both in the States and here. Check out the first trailer for the film, which stars Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton.
Nichols’ film is inspired by 2011 HBO documentary The Loving Story, in which Nancy Buirski chronicles the story of Richard (Edgerton) and Mildred (Negga) Loving, an interracial couple, who married in 1958 in defiance of Virginia’s Racial Integrity Act of 1924. They were arrested and exiled from the state, but that kicked off a landmark civil rights debate that led to a Supreme Court case on the matter that invalidated laws banning interracial marriage.
Nick Kroll (in a rare dramatic role) plays someone who agrees to help, while the likes of Bill Camp, Marton Csokas and Terri Abney also appear. Oh, and because it's Nichols' tradition, there is of course a role for one Michael Shannon.
Loving arrives in the US on November 4 to launch a potential awards run. We'll have to wait a little longer, as it's currently targeting a February 2017 release here.
