As his follow-up to 2015's creepy, atmospheric The Gift, Joel Edgerton picked a real-life story of personal pain and conflict with Boy Erased. The first trailer for the film is now online.
Edgerton adapted Gerrard Conley's memoir for the film, which sees Lucas Hedges playing a character called Jared, whose story is based on Conley's.
After coming out to his parents – a Baptist minister and his wife, played by Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman – he's given a choice: attend a "gay conversion therapy" program claiming that it can "cure" his homosexuality, or face losing the connections to his family and friends for life. Despite the pressure on him to conform to what how his father in particular thinks he should be, he emerges more determined than ever to be true to himself.
With Edgerton taking on the role of the program's uber-religious leader, Boy Erased will be out in the US on 2 November, but has yet to announce a UK date.
