There are a few possibly explanations for the teaser poster for Nymphomaniac. First of all, it could mean that Lars Von Trier has a slightly unhealthy relationship with punctuation, which is why he uses brackets to sum up his sex-focused film. Secondly, it could be the case that the film is so thoroughly filthy that there was not a single frame that could be publicly displayed. Or more likely these brackets are meant to represent some rather naughty part of the female anatomy.
For the record, our money's on the third option (and over at The Shiznit they seem to be of the same opinion) but we'll see when the film comes out. The story focuses on Charlotte Gainsbourg's Joe (male name, female person) who is saved from a beating by Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard) and tells him the story of her sex-obsessed life. The project is due to result in two feature films, each with two different cuts: one sexual, the other sexually explicit. So that's four different films for completists to see, or two if you don't want to see everyone's bits.
Nymphomaniac also stars Christian Slater, Jamie Bell, Shia LaBeouf, Connie Nielsen, Willem Dafoe, Uma Thurman and Udo Kier. The film wasn't ready in time for Cannes (Von Trier's "persona non grata" status of a couple of years ago has expired, it seems) but is expected to be up for sale at the Market there. Look out for a premiere of Part One at Venice or Toronto, we suppose, later this year.
