Filming has been going on for a while for Damon Lindelof's ambitious/risky attempt to channel Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' iconic Watchmen graphic novel into a new form for HBO. The show's Instagram account has a first, intriguing teaser image online, which you can see below and in slight motion at the account itself.
The picture poses various questions, including whether this is one of the new costumed characters (with a nod to Rorschach) or some odd police force.
Lindelof has been clear that while this Watchmen will exist in the same universe as the graphic novel (ground already trod by Zack Snyder's movie), it won't aim to directly rehash this story. Instead, it'll spin a story of new characters that treats the original as canon, with references to it while following a fresh plot path.
The cast for this one includes Jeremy Irons, Regina King, Don Johnson, Louis Gossett Jr., Frances Fisher and Tim Blake Nelson, with Lindelof as executive producer and Nicole Kassell directing the first episode and likely some subsequent instalments. Eight episodes make up the first season, and the show should be on screens next year, though HBO has yet to announce an official date.
