After beavering away in his splinter corner of the DC movie universe, Todd Phillips is finally ready to show more of Joker, the street-level, grit-strewn origin story for Batman's most famous nemesis, albeit one that appears to be staying firmly free of superhero excess. The first poster for the film, featuring Joaquin Phoenix's title character, is online.

Phoenix's Arthur Fleck is a man struggling to make it in a hard world, rejected by society and eventually driven to the madness that fuels the Clown Prince of Crime. With Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver drawing influences from Martin Scorsese's The King Of Comedy (and securing its star, Robert De Niro to appear in a key role), the psychological crime drama is officially described as "an exploration of a man disregarded by society that is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale."

Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Bill Camp and Brett Cullen are also in the movie, which will land in UK cinemas on 4 October. The teaser trailer is promised for tomorrow, which tracks with the poster's arrival and the likelihood that Warner Bros. will be presenting something from the film at this week's CinemaCon event.
