After years spent co-creating and directing TV series, Richard Ayoade made the leap to the big screen with 2010’s fantastic, touching and funny Submarine. We’ve been eagerly awaiting anything from his follow-up, a comedy-drama based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story The Double. The first images from the film are below, courtesy of Cinema Teaser.

While many of the details about the movie have been kept quiet, we do know it tells the story of an insignificant man (Jesse Eisenberg) driven almost to a breakdown by the appearance of his doppelganger. We also know that Ayoade intends it to reflect on loneliness and our inherent need to love and be loved.

From the looks of these first two images (one of which also features co-star Noah Taylor), Ayoade has crafted something moody, atmospheric and very different from his first film.

With Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn, Rade Serbedzija, James Fox and Yasmin Paige also among the cast, the film is currently being put through post-production and should hopefully hit screens next year.
