Even as positive buzz is beginning to seep out about Melissa McCarthy’s new comedy Spy, the actress is hard at work on her next project, Michelle Darnell. Now we have a first look at how McCarthy will look in the film via Entertainment Weekly.
And a few more details have leaked out about the comedy, including the fact that Michelle is a character that McCarthy actually created as a member of the Groundlings sketch comedy troupe a decade ago in Los Angeles.
With McCarthy co-writing alongside husband Ben Falcone and Steve Mallory and Falcone calling the shots, Michelle Darnell is about a prickly self-help guru who is sent to the slammer for dodgy dealing and insider trading. Freshly released, she starts trying to earn her way back to her former glory, but finds that it’s not so easy when you’ve stepped on everyone on your way up. Among those holding karmic grudges include Peter Dinklage, Kristen Bell, Kathy Bates and Veep’s Timothy Simons. As part of her comeback, she enlists the help of a down-on-their-luck Daisy Girl Scout troupe to sell homemade brownies. Renaming them Darnell’s Darlings, they’re not exactly your sweet-natured do-gooders…
**Michelle Darnell **will assault our cinemas on May 6, 2016. Spy is set for June 5
