In its continued attempt to turn its entire animated back catalogue into live-action movies (or hybrids such as The Jungle Book), Disney's attention has turned to Mulan. And with director Niki Caro kicking off shooting on the movie, the first image of newcomer Yifei Liu as the title character is online, and you can find it above.

Offering a slightly different story based on the Chinese folktale from the 1998 'toon, the film will nevertheless follow the eldest daughter of an honoured warrior who is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors.

Also in the cast are Yoson An, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Ron Yuan, Tzi Ma, Chum Ehelepola, Gong Li and Jet Li, with Rosalind Chao and Cheng Pei-Pei the most recent recruits.

Caro will be filming in China and New Zealand, with the new Mulan itself scheduled to arrive on 27 March, 2020.
