Stop reloading your arms, and use them to scroll down a tiny bit – Netflix has released a first look at Henry Cavill in character as Geralt of Rivia, for its upcoming fantasy adaptation The Witcher. The Superman and Mission: Impossible – Fallout star has taken the lead role in the streaming service’s show, based on the novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, and the hugely popular Witcher video games it spawned.
Geralt is a grizzled monster hunter in a medieval fantasy land – and if Cavill looks a little clean-cut in this camera test, we all know from Fallout that he can blast out some impressive facial hair when the time comes. Not only is Cavill a massive gamer, but executive producer Lauren S. Hissrich tweeted of his appointment: “He was my first meeting. I didn’t have writers or scripts yet – just a greenlight and a lot of passion. That was four months ago, and I’ve never forgotten the passion he brought. He IS Geralt. He always has been. I’m so thrilled to welcome HENRY CAVILL to the #Witcher family.”
The new clip reveals that the show is set to hit the streaming service in 2019 – in the wake of Game Of Thrones’ final season, it looks like Netflix might be first off the bat to follow it up with their own epic swords-and-sorcery saga. Netflix also has new Narnia adaptations in the works, while Amazon has Lord of the Rings in its wheelhouse.
