There’s one thing that this first image of Ryan Reynolds as **Green Lantern gets right, and it’s the fact that it’s green. Very green. Very, very green. In fact, it’s so green, it looks like a sprout bomb exploded in an Astroturf factory. And it’s certainly different from some of the other recent costumes. The question is, is it impressive?
Well, it’s early days, and we’ve got to admit some mixed feelings. Part of us just can’t get over the fact that this looks startlingly like early production art (not surprising since the film is still in progress) and we’re sure the SFX teams will tinker endlessly with the look of Reynolds’ Hal Jordan until the minute the film has to emerge from the editing suite. Which is, we suppose one of the advantages of using CGI mapping to create the outfit on the fly and simulate the fact that it’s the ring that does the work when it comes to the Lantern’s gear.
As Reynolds tells Entertainment weekly: “Will and imagination are his superpowers. We need a circus of Timothy Learys to think of things Hal would invent with his ring.”
And they got the logo right, at least, even if the suit itself looks weirdly like one of the Visible Man dolls with the skin stripped away and the muscles showing.
