It feels like we've been waiting ages for the first proper look at director Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of sprawling sci-fi novel series Dune. Our long wait is over at last, thanks to a still provided by Warner Bros. to Vanity Fair, featuring Timothée Chalamet as central hero – though he's more complicated than that – Paul Atreides.
If you're wondering why the planet he's moodily walking on doesn't look like a scorching desert wasteland, that's because at this point in the movie, he's still on the Atreides' home world of Caladan, with ships arriving to take him and his family to the planet of Arrakis, AKA Dune. There, he'll face treachery, mortal danger and a chance to become something more than he ever imagined.
“The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts,” Chalamet tells the publication. For more from the actor, head toVanity Fair's site.
With the likes of Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa among its stacked cast, Dune is still scheduled to arrive on 18 December, and all of our fingers and toes are crossed that it keeps the slot in the wake of all the changes to the film world's schedule.
