Speaking of Guy Pearce as we recently were, here's news of another new film in which he features. His is a supporting role in Equals, the sci-fi adventure romance starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult. There's no sign of him in this first image however, which features only the two star cross'd principals, silhouetted against a chilly blue background.
The official Equals synposis gives us a future when emotions are a thing of the past and a new breed of humans (the Equals of the title) live in Spock-like harmony. When a disease starts activating emotions in some subjects, they find themselves disappeared by the ruling regime. And when Silas (Hoult) becomes infected and realizes Nia (Stewart) has emotions too, they join forces to go on the run.
If that's all sounding vaguely familiar it's because, as revealed earlier this year, Equals is an updated YA version of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. Hoult's character is the Winston Smith role, with Stewart his Julia (Winston's thought-crime co-conspirator) and, we'd make a guess, Pearce as the Inner Party's O'Brien, or version thereof. We suspect that any echoes of Equilibrium are coincidental, and unwanted by any but a hard-core of fans in the Empire office.
Nathan Parker (Moon) wrote the screenplay and the director is Drake Doremus (Like Crazy, Breathe In). Ridley Scott is among the producers, Jacki Weaver is elsewhere in the cast, and Equals is due for release sometime next year.
