While the casting of both Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix in his Mary Magdalene drama proved controversial, director Garth Davis has pressed ahead with the film. The first image of Mara has now arrived, and can be seen above.
Written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett, the film aims to be an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic figures in spiritual history. Mary will be seen as a young woman on the search for a new way of living who finds what she's after in the social movement led by Jesus of Nazareth (Phoenix).
She soon finds a place for herself within the group he's gathered, but can any story about Mary Magdalene truly have a happy ending?
Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim also feature in Mary Magdalene, which heads to UK cinemas on 16 March. We can also expect the first trailer this week.
