Though she's more usually been found galavanting around that galaxy far, far away, Daisy Ridley has found time for other work around her Star Wars responsibilities. She's leading the cast of Ophelia with Naomi Watts, and the first image of Ridley in character has emerged courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter.

A new take on the story told in Shakespeare's Hamlet, the film is based on Lisa Klein's award-winning novel and has been adapted by Semi Chellas for Claire McCarthy to direct. Ridley is the troubled title character and Watts is Gertrude, Hamlet's mother and Queen of Denmark. Clive Owen is playing Claudius, with George MacKay as Hamlet and Tom Felton as Laertes.

"Set in the 14th century but spoken in a contemporary voice, Ophelia will put the titular character center stage," producer Daniel Bobker has said about the film. "There’s something extra precious in bringing to life a treasured female icon, celebrated for centuries as an alluring figure in the shadows of Shakespeare’s most famous work, without ever really having her own story told."

The films rights are – try not to be shocked, here – on sale at the Cannes Film Festival market. Ridley will next be seen in Murder On The Orient Express (3 November) before returning as Rey for Star Wars: The Last Jedi on 15 December.
