With the studios clamouring to get their trailers out in front of movies and on the web as quickly as possible in the run up to Christmas, the sheer volume of promos arriving is becoming ridiculous. Universal’s Fast Five is due to throw its footage outof a speeding car on Tuesday, but the filmmakers have decided to jump the gun by shoving the first picture online before it to get a jump on the week.
Fast Five finds ex-cop Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) and gear head racer criminal Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) once more on the run, this time from a combination of a corrupt businessmen who will stop at nothing to have them killed and a tough-as-old-boots federal agent who grabs the assignment to hunt them down and bring them to justice.
To play the fed, Luke Hobbs, director Justin Lin realised they needed some added muscle. Enter Dwayne Johnson, who between this and Faster, has kicked back into action with both feet. "If you're going to do a **Fast and Furious **movie, you've got to go bigger each time," Lin tells USA Today. "People thought it would be impossible to get Dwayne. But he didn't show up looking to cash a paycheck. That's pretty amazing, for a star like him to join the fifth part of a franchise. That says a lot about him and the fans."
From the sound of it – and what we’ve seen of the film so far – everything will be just that little bit bigger, faster and more likely to go kablooey than ever. "One of the things I've always loved about the franchise — the reason I think it's been so successful over the years — is that they never stop trying to up the action," says Johnson.
But Lin believes he knows what the appeal is… "I think what keeps it going is that it's not really about cars," Lin says. "I have to be honest: I'm not a big car guy. At the core, Fast and Furious is about family and how to create them." Um… yeah. The family. Uh. Huh. We still think It’s the motors.
The first official image, which sees Diesel and Johnson either A) enmeshed in a staring competition B) comparing head-shaving tips or C) about to snog, is below.
