The trailer for what is likely to be the biggest movie of the summer – Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen – has gone online, and it’s spectacular enough to make us revisit the opinion we expressed just a few words ago. This will be the biggest film of the summer.
Click here now to check out the astonishing eye candy that Michael Bay has put together for his mega-sequel, which looks like it will deliver on a visual level like no other movie this year. Good luck to the Academy if they try to snub ILM for the Best Visual Effects Oscar next year.
If you haven’t clicked yet, here’s roughly what you need to know:
The plot seems to revolve around a sliver of the Energon Cube that is, somehow, in the possession of Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and seems to unlock some hidden secrets, or messages, in his brain. The Decepticons want to get their robotic hands on it.
Megan Fox, back as Sam’s girlfriend Mikaela, is not unattractive.
Megatron, whose presence was denied for so long by Bay, is in the film after all, rescued from the depths of the Pacific Ocean by Decepticon allies. “Megatron wants what’s in my head,” says Sam, and he's not about to ask nicely for it.
There’s comedy, and it’s just as broad as the last film, with Bumblebee, John Turturro’s Agent Simmons – now a paranoid conspiracy theorist living with his mum - and Kevin Dunn and Julie White as Ron and Judy Witwicky, parents of Sam, carrying the brunt of the comedic heavy lifting. Whether that’s a good thing or not depends on your feelings about the first movie.
Optimus Prime gets to do a lot more ass-kicking this time around. Conversely, he also seems to be on the end of a major beatdown at several points. However, our theory that he may be killed off in the movie is weakened somewhat by the knowledge that Prime narrates the movie. Hmm…
Oh, and the action and effects are on a scale far beyond anything attempted in the first movie. And Bay has, apparently, managed to dial back on the close-up camerawork and fast editing that made the action scenes so hard to discern last time around. Colour-coding the new Transformers also helps. Nevertheless, there is stuff in the trailer that is truly jawdropping, including the debut of the much-hyped 135ft tall Decepticon, Devastator, who’s seen wreaking havoc near the Pyramids at the end of the movie.
One thing that does seem to be missing from the trailer? The title star, The Fallen. But we’re sure he’ll show his ugly head in due course…
