Like the true story it chronicles – that of scrappy boxer “Irish” Micky Ward – The Fighter **has been counted out more than once, with Darren Aronofsky aiming to direct it for years, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt both attached at one point and now David O. Russell finally getting Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in the ring for the finished movie. The trailer's over at Apple to show off their efforts.
The Fighter appears to boast everything you need to grab some awards buzz as Oscar season heats up: an underdog story, Wahlberg in dramatic fighting form, Christian Bale going full-on with a physical transformation and support from the likes of Amy Adams and Melissa Leo. Plus blood, sweat, tears and, in the trailer, at least, slow-motion.
Ward’s story is also one of those shocking-but-true tales of a fighter who rose to the top of his game, came crashing down to earth dealing with his family problems (including crime-prone brother Dickie, played by Bale) and then battling his way back again.
Wahlberg has been obsessed with getting this movie made for years now – bringing trainers along to other film sets so he was ready whenever the financing/behind-the-scenes team came together. He also had the HBO boxing camera team shoot in the ring, which is why the fight footage has that authentic sheen.
The trailer’s in its corner at Apple, and the film will arrive in cinemas on February 4.
