No one can deny that Ben Wheatley is a rising directorial star, after the excellent Kill List and Sightseers. But he’s also a whirling dervish of cinematic creativity who seemingly operates at speeds that would kill normal humans. Case in point? He’s already shot his next film, A Field In England, and the proof arrives in the first picture, courtesy of Film 4.

Set during the English Civil War, Field finds a small group of deserters fleeing a raging conflict through an overgrown field. They’re captured by a man named O’Neil, an alchemist, and pressed into helping him find a treasure he believes is buried there.

But as the search drags on, and the men learn that the haul might be something other than gold, the group descends into arguments, fighting and paranoia.

Among those scrapping away with will be Kill Lis****t’s Michael Smiley, Sightseers’ Richard Glover, The League Of Gentlemen’s Reese Shearsmith, The Mighty Boosh’s Julian Barratt and Ideal’s Ryan Pope.

A Field In England should be with us next year. For more on the film, head to Film 4’s blog. Sightseers, meanwhile, opens on November 30.
