Like some sort of indie drama version of a superhero team-up, City of God/Constant Gardener director Fernando Meirelles is locking in a deal to direct 360, which will feature a script by The Queen/The Damned United’s Peter Morgan.
According to Deadline, 360 will weave its way through the sexual mores of various social classes. And while that doesn’t exactly tell us a lot, the script is inspired by Reigen, a play originally written in1900 by Austrian author Arthur Schnitzler. We’ll give you a moment to stop snickering over the idea of a play about sex written by someone named Schnitzler, and remind you that he wrote the Dream Story that inspired Eyes Wide Shut.
Despite its turn-of-the-last-century origins, Reigen has proved to be a fertile source for other media, leaving a trail of scandal wherever it goes. It was most memorably adapted into 1950’s La Ronde, and more recently into 1998's David Hare-penned stage adaptation The Blue Room, best known for nekkid acting from Iain Glen and Nicole Kidman.
Now BBC Films is hoping it’ll fuel a solid new drama from Meirelles, who could do with a boost after the disappointing Blindness. Morgan, meanwhile, is up to his eyeballs in writing assignments, between scripting a new version of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and having just worked with Clint Eastwood on Hereafter.
