Fernando Meirelles, the man who has treated us to the likes of The Constant Gardener and City Of God, has found his next project.

He’s headed back to Brazil to handle Blindness, based on Jose Saramago’s 1995 novel. The philosophical thriller tracks the chaos that ensues when an epidemic of sight loss seeps through a modern-day – but unnamed – city and society starts to collapse. Cough cough Day of the Triffids without the plants cough.

Canadian writer/director Don McKellar – who himself tackled civilisation’s demise in apocalyptic thriller Last Night - has written the script and will play a supporting role in the film.
