With **The Force Awakens **making its way through post-production, things are beginning to heat up over at the camp preparing the first of the spin-off stand-alone Star Wars films that will fill the gaps between the new trilogy. Godzilla director Gareth Edwards is busy developing the film, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, Felicity Jones, Rooney Mara and Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany are all testing for a lead role{ =nofollow}.

It’s early days of course, and nothing is known about the plot or the character that the various actresses are auditioning to play. As is now standard for the Star Wars movies, most of the details are still tightly locked away.

And Edwards has already been busy looking at actors for the film, with testing underway in the UK and America. Jones, of course, has had a career boost with her Oscar nomination for The Theory Of Everything, but she’s in demand and might have a filming conflict. Mara, still best known for David Fincher’s version of The Girl With The Dragoon Tattoo, is another strong possibility, and Maslany has proven her acting chops playing multiple roles on the sci-fi show.

The film is currently putting out the 'Writer Wanted' sign, as first-draft man Gary Whitta left the project recently. He’ll need to be replaced soon as production needs to kick into gear ready for a December 16, 2016 release date.
