All things considered, this will not be a weekend that Will and son Jaden Smith look back on with fondness. Their latest father/son acting collaboration After Earth faced a pummelling from critics and then suffered a humiliating defeat at the box office across the pond.
For Vin Diesel and the Fast & Furious gang, however, things continue to speed along smoothly, with the sixth instalment staying atop the US charts in its second weekend of release, earning $34.5 million along the way and more than $170 million so far in the States alone. New arrival Now You See Me also did decent business, with the magicians-pull-heists pic making $28 million vanish from punters’ pockets. After Earth, meanwhile, staggered into third place, taking home $27 million.
Animated adventure Epic clung to fourth place with $16.4 million, and fifth-place** Star Trek Into Darkness** made the same amount.
The Hangover Part III sank to sixth, likely hurt by bad word of mouth, managing just $15.9 million this week. **Iron Man 3 **was down to seventh, taking in $8 million, while The Great Gatsby was eighth with $6.2 million. At ninth, The Croods made $615,000, with Frances Ha slipping into the top 10 with $552,000.
