Despite the magical draw of the Wizarding World, it appears that the Fantastic Beasts series is running a little low on audience support, at least in the US. While The Crimes Of Grindelwald topped the US box office, it had to make do with a $62.2 million launch.
That represents the lowest opening to date for a Potter-aligned movie, but Warner Bros. can at least take comfort in the overseas earnings, which totaled $191 million, for a worldwide figure of $253.2 million.
Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, last week's top spot occupant, was pushed to second place, taking in $38.1 million, while Bohemian Rhapsody slipped to third on $15.7 million. You have to head to fourth place to find the next new entry in the charts, as Mark Wahlberg's new comedy Instant Family aimed for the humerus and the heartstrings, and rounded up $14.7 million with its tale of adoption. Widows landed fifth, making $12.3 million.
At sixth was The Nutcracker And The Four Realms, with $4.6 million, ahead of A Star Is Born in seventh and $4.3 million. Horror thriller Overlord made $3.8 million and The Girl In The Spider's Web tumbled to ninth from sixth with $2.5 million. Finally, in 10th was Nobody's Fool, earning $2.2 million.
