With all its high octane thrills, heart-in-mouth drama, and sheer kinetic force, it's surprising that the world of Formula 1 has seen so few truly great movies made about it over the years. Senna and Rush are perhaps the most obvious two, but otherwise the elite sport has been one formula that's never quite been perfected. But if the first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski's Brad Pitt and Damson Idris-starring F1 is anything to go by, petrolheads and cinematic thrill seekers alike are about to get their engines started in a big way. Check out the first teaser for the film, premiered during this past weekend's British Grand Prix, below;
As a young Padawan once sorta said, "Now this is Formula One racing!" From the roar of the engines, to the smoke spinning off the tyres, to the adrenaline rush of those real-time cockpit shots filmed at unimaginably high speeds at Grands Prix around the world, this trailer may not reveal much of what F1 is about, but it sure as hell gives us a good idea how the movie's going to feel. "We need to build our car for combat" purrs Brad Pitt's former F1 driver at the start of the teaser as he prepares to get back on the grid; the minute and a half that follows — featuring tense pitstops, tight corner turns, a slew of stars (Idris! Javier Bardem! Kerry Condon! Tobias Menzies!), and the immortal sounds of eternal banger 'We Will Rock You' — suggest Pitt and his team are ready to wage wheel-based war.
Per the official logline for the Apple Original film, which has been made in collaboration with Formula 1 and the F1 community, F1 sees Pitt star "as a former driver who returns to Formula 1, alongside Damson Idris as his teammate at APXGP, a fictional team on the grid." Further details on the plot of the film, which is set to continue shooting all the way through to the end of the F1 season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this December, remain under wraps for now. But with Kosinski and co feeling the need for speed already based on this first teaser, we'll be all revved up and ready to go when F1 races into cinemas here in the UK on 25 June, 2025. And, for our American friends, you'll be able to put the pedal to the metal and hit up your local multiplex two days later on 27 June, 2025. Vroom vroom!
