It’s been nearly a decade since the last trip to the well with The Ring 2, the second American film adapted from the 1998 Japanese horror. While the fervour for Japan-inspired horror appears to have long since been surplanted by the likes of **The Conjuring **and Insidious, Paramount is not ready to let go of the Ring. Now Before The Fall director F. Javier Gutierrez is in talks to handle a third outing{ =nofollow}.

In development since at least 2010, this will be a third American look at the mysterious events surrounding a cursed video tape. Given how media use has moved on, we assume it's a pirated MP4 that has spread across the web by now. Oooh! And that would allow the filmmakers to get a not-so-subtle anti-piracy message in there too.

With producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald attached, not much else is known about the film. Back when it was first mooted, David Loucka was hired to write the script, though given that he delivered dodgy horror thrillers** Dream House** and House At The End Of The Street, he may no longer be attached. Chances are Gutierrez will want to take his own crack at the screenplay, or at least work with someone new. The studio hasn’t said whether it’ll still be in 3D, which was announced back in the day, but don’t count it out.

Gutierrez, meanwhile, is also still attached to make the long-gestating reboot of **The Crow, though that one is still squawking away in development hell and may have to wait even longer if the Ring takes precedence.
