Following the debacle of Scottish football fans supporting Argentina during this year's World Cup, the English are enjoying their revenge as a dish best served cold. Today we hear that the new film from English filmmaker Ken Loach, Sweet Sixteen, will be subtitled in English for cinemagoers who can't understand what the Glaswegian actors are saying. The film, which uses amateur actors in the main roles, was subtitled in both English and French when it was screened earlier this year at Cannes. And it seems likely that when the film is released in England this October the English subtitles will remain. 'Sub-titles would give a non-Scottish audience a chance to adjust to the language without missing any of the story at an early stage,' was how Icon Films explained the decision to the Independent. This will be the second Loach film to provide English subtitles for its audience - Riff Raff was also subtitled - but the first to provide it for this country rather than America, which notoriously finds films like Trainspotting and Twin Town hard to get to grips with.
