Cancelled by the US SyFy network after three seasons, The Expanse was saved by Amazon Prime video, partly because it had been doing well on the company's streaming service and partly because big boss Jeff Bezos is a big fan of the sci-fi series. Season 4 is now an Amazon original, and the full trailer has landed.
In the series, adapted from James SA Corey's (a pen name for writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who work together on the books and the show) novels, we follow the adventures of a plucky crew, trying to navigate a galaxy where humans from Earth, the asteroid belt ("Belters") and Martians have to co-exist... Not always comfortably. Giant companies employ people to transport needed goods and there is political wrangling aplenty. Not to mention a mysterious, powerful and often deadly alien life form.
Things got even more complicated when humanity opened up ancient alien gates to thousands of new planets, where a blood-soaked gold rush begins, igniting new conflicts between Earth, Mars, and the Belt. Meanwhile, on one unexplored planet, the Rocinante crew gets caught in a violent clash between an Earth mining corporation and desperate Belter settlers as deadly new threats from the protomolecule emerge.
Steven Strait, Wes Chatham, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Frankie Adams, Cas Anvar and Dominique Tipper are in the cast, and the show will be back on Amazon on 13 December. If you've never watched it, you might enjoy another fan, one Kevin Smith, recapping the story so far here.
